Purple Hibiscus Plot Overview

Purple Hibiscus set in Enugu, tells a story about a young girl Kambili and her family. It begins on a Palm Sunday. Kambili and her family are just returning from mass and an argument ensues between Jaja and Eugene their father. He asks why Jaja did not go for communion and Jaja replies in a manner his father does not like. He reacts by throwing his missal at Jaja which misses. However, it does land on the precious figurines of their mother and breaks it.

The story progresses with the knowledge that Mama has had several miscarriages due to constant physical and psychological battery by Papa (Eugene). He is known for his unorthodox punishments which led to restricted communication in their home. Thus, most times, Jaja and Kambili talk through their eyes.
